Many shelters today have full time veterinary services, so pets are examined and receive the necessary treatments as soon as they are admitted to the shelters and before the adoption process begins. This is a standard procedure unless a pet is brought in by his or her owner to be put up for adoption. Additionally, most shelters require an identification microchip be inserted under the skin as a form of permanent identification.
